In every class we teach, there are a few things that seem to come up again and again. Not the fancy figures or dramatic dips, but the foundations — the quiet, powerful details that sit underneath all great dancing. These are the things we find ourselves repeating, refining, and reminding. They’re the kind of insights that might not look like much from the outside, but they change everything about how the dance feels.
That’s why we created the Top Tips video series – available to all members of The Blues Room.
These short videos are designed to zero in on the pearls of wisdom we share most often. Each one focuses on a key concept, principle, or technique that we believe every dancer should understand and revisit regularly. They’re perfect for watching on the go, popping into your practice routine, or returning to when you feel stuck or disconnected in your dancing.
So far, we’ve created 13 Top Tips videos, including:
- Grounding
- Alignment and posture
- The pulse
- Dancing between the beats
- Turning on a line
- Hands and arms in turns
- Dancing from the centre
- Closed position
- Reconnecting after a turn
- Rolling through the feet
- Getting low
- Inviting a partner into close embrace
- Using the introduction
Each video is short, practical, and straight to the point. It’s the kind of advice we wish we’d been given earlier in our dance journeys — the things that suddenly make movements feel more fluid, connection feel clearer, and rhythm feel more natural.
Why Focus on the Small Stuff?
Because the small stuff is the big stuff.
Paying attention to things like posture, pulse, and how you roll through your feet doesn’t just make your dancing look better — it makes it feel better. It helps your body work more efficiently, it supports better musicality, and it deepens your connection with your partner. These are the details that elevate your dancing from “getting through the steps” to really dancing.
The more we work with dancers — from complete beginners to professionals — the more we see how much growth comes from refining the basics. And the beautiful thing? These small adjustments often unlock big changes, fast.
So if you’re feeling stuck, or you want to take your dancing to the next level, the Top Tips are a great place to start. Sometimes, all it takes is one little shift to make everything click.
