The Blues Room Beginners Survival Kit Category - The Blues Room

Welcome to The Blues Room, where we believe every dancer’s journey begins with a single, confident step onto the dance floor. Whether you’ve got experience in other dances or are venturing into the wonderful world of dance for the first time, our Beginners Survival Kit is your gateway to embracing the blues with ease.

Our specially curated set of courses is designed to equip you with the skills and confidence you need to step onto the dance floor and feel good about yourself! Here’s a closer look at the courses that make up your ultimate survival kit.

1. Introduction to Blues

The dance floor can be an intimidating place for a newcomer, but with our Introduction to Blues course, you’ll find yourself at ease in no time. This is the perfect starting point, where you’ll get to grips with the fundamental principles of blues dance. We’ll guide you through the groove of the music, helping you move both solo and with a partner. You’ll explore various partnered holds and develop the essential skills of leading and following. By the end of this course, you’ll be able to step onto the dance floor with the confidence that you belong there.

2. Basic Turns

Once you’ve got to grips with the basics, it’s time to add some flair to your dancing. Our Basic Turns course is all about expanding your repertoire with simple yet stylish turning variations. You’ll learn how to change speed and dynamics, enhancing the fluidity of your movements. This course is also an opportunity to hone your partnering skills, as it requires a deeper connection between leader and follower.

3. Side by Side

The Side By Side course is where versatility meets simplicity. This hold is one of our favourites  for its adaptability. We’ll teach you a variety of side-by-side variations that will allow you to travel around the floor with ease and connect seamlessly from one move to the next. As you build up your pot of moves, you’ll find that the side-by-side hold becomes a reliable foundation for your dance, offering endless possibilities for creativity and expression.

4. Jookin’ Blues

Connect to the rich history of blues dance with our Jookin’ Blues course. Here, you’ll discover a style of dancing that originated in the Jook Joints in the deep South of the USA as early as the late 1800s. These were small, intimate spaces, so you’ll learn how to make an impact with subtle, controlled movements that focus on rhythm and body shaping.

5. Ballroom Blues

Last but certainly not least, our Ballroom Blues course invites you to explore the more elegant side of blues dancing. This style developed in larger ballrooms and dance halls where there was space to travel, and was danced to the more melodic sounds of Big Bands during the Swing Era. Think fancy moves, travelling steps, and a sense of momentum that carries you across the floor.

Each of these courses in the Beginners Survival Kit is designed to build on the last, ensuring that by the time you’ve completed them, you’ll have a well-rounded set of skills to take with you onto the dance floor. More importantly, you’ll have the confidence to enjoy every step, every turn, and every connection you make through the art of blues dance.

We Love Beginners!

I’ve had the pleasure of teaching blues dance with Adamo since 2012, and together, we’ve helped thousands of new dancers find their feet and fall in love with blues. From our early days teaching in London to travelling the world to teach at countless blues dance festivals, we’ve always had a soft spot for beginner dancers. There’s something incredibly rewarding about seeing someone take their first steps on the dance floor.

What Adamo and I love most about teaching beginners is their curiosity. There’s this eagerness to explore and enjoy the music that’s so inspiring. We truly believe that it doesn’t take years to become a dancer—just minutes. Sure, technique takes time to master (and there’s always room for growth), but experiencing the joy of moving your body to music can be instant. That’s the philosophy we teach with: feel the music, put it inside you, and let everything else flow from there.

We aim to make every class we teach, especially beginner classes, a space where you can find that joy right away. So, when you join our Beginners Survival Kit, know that Adamo and I are here to guide you with passion, patience, and plenty of encouragement. We can’t wait to see you out there, moving to the blues!
