Join Vicci and Mike as they guide you through this fun riffin’ and cuttin’ course. Dance lots, laugh lots, and discover your dancing super powers!
Learn essential skills for bringing out the best in your and your friends’ solo dancing! Riffin’ and cuttin’ are both common modes of solo dancing with other people in Black American dance forms, and learning these modes will help us all build a stronger dance culture in the Blues scene. To get the full benefit of this course, you will need another person to dance with. However, you can still work through a lot of the movement exercises alone.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Understand how to ‘riff’ when solo dancing with other people
- Understand the difference between riffin’ and cuttin’
- Understand the etiquette for cuttin’ battles
- Play with levels, size, facing, direction, texture, energy, rhythm and tempo in your solo dancing
- Develop phrasing and composition in your solo dancing
- Structure your dancing using 12 bar blues and call and response phrasing
- Create a conversation with your dancing
- Cut your ‘opponent’ in dance battle
- Understand the importance of cuttin’ battles and competition within blues dance culture
